Generic Titles and Fair-trade Bananas

Hello readers!   Or at least “Hello?   Anybody there?”

This is my first blog and, outside the people who I’ve told to read this and those who have to read it anyway (you know who you are), I’m predicting that no one will be currently reading this.   By that logic there is no point in introducing myself because generally the people reading this will know, to a large extent, who I am.   Besides, it’s always being bandied about to show and not tell in my Creative Writing seminars (wink, wink!).   However, for the benefit 0f those who have no idea who I am, probably the masses of fans I’ll have amassed through the future life of this blog, my name is Luke Saunders, I’m in my 3rd year of University at Royal Holloway and I’m writing this because it’s part of my degree.   As I have hinted to earlier, I am reading English and Creative Writing, which is just as interesting, but definitely harder than it sounds!   I love poetry and writing stories particularly, so if you start to see my language becoming too flowery and totally bizarre analogies popping out of nowhere then you’ll know why.   I’ll be updating this blog at least once every week, on a… hmm… let’s say Monday because everyone loves to hear someone complain on a Monday.

To be honest, I’m never before been too interested in blogs.   I think they’re slightly pretentious and generally downbeat.   More than that, I don’t really see the point of them.   In my opinion nothing I’m going to write may be completely different to something thousands on the people on the net have already written.   More than that, they’re sometimes on the long side.   I don’t think I can honestly, outside my degree, be bothered reading reams and reams of someone else’s anecdotes and I’m guessing you probably will feel similarly.   This isn’t a sly dig at anyone in particular: I’m really just saying: “Scintillating, but short anyone?”

I think the best blog I’ve ever read was the one done by my housemate last year. His link is www.tttppp123.blogspot.com if you’re interested.   As you may well have noticed, his site isn’t much of a blog at all as there’s not much writing and loads of games he’s nabbed from the Worldwide Web.   I think if I did that in this blog I might seriously fail, but it’s fun. So, I’ll try to keep things amusing, if talking about my life and opinions can be at all!

My vast experience in past blogging leads me to a surprising conclusion: A good blog should have is an ability to stir debate, despite being able to hide it under the mist of everyday experience.   One example of this is could be as follows: I was shopping on Tuesday, and bought some bananas. However, they were charcoal black and Rolls Royce expensive. I was tempted to ditch them for some others, but they weren’t fair-trade.   One of the best things about this is that you don’t really even need to have an opinion to state one on the web, you can just put something that seems controversial down and let the people commenting do the work!  Having said this, that’s probably not my style. But still, it’d be great if we could interact a bit. Let’s say, I’ll make this stimulating, if you give me comments back right?

On that note, what do you think makes a good blog?   And more importantly, do you buy fair-trade?   You should.   If you have any opinions please use the comments box.   That means do it now!

God bless until next week guys.

Wow, I’m so looking forward to reading your blog Luke, even though I don’t have to!

I buy Fairtrade tea all the time and on the very rare occasion that I buy bananas they will also be Fairtrade. Fairtrade chocolate is yummy but I don’t buy it cos it’s very much more upmarket and expensive than other chocolate. I think if I’d been in your situation and the only Fairtrade bananas there were black and yucky looking I wouldn’t have bought any bananas that day.

Also, I’d like to give my support and agreement to your praise of Generic Title – it’s great. And I’m not biased in any way…

Fair trade?! I’ll give you fair trade. When I was a lad working down the coal pits I had to do 21 hours of hard labour every day, and then still get back in time to turn on the X-factor for my old man. And what did I get for it? Nothing! That’s right – I was a volunteer coal miner. So the next time you go bandying about terms like fair and trade think first about those underaged volunteer coal miners (you could call them ‘coal minors’) who work much harder than the banana growers, and who get paid vastly less.

    Wow Naomi.
Never before have I seen such an unbiased and praiseworthy comment! Would you be interested in becoming my full time side-kick? I pay very reasonable wages and you get a range of complimentary fair-trade items that I don’t really want.

I was using a bit of hyperbole, but fair-trade bananas are definitely worse than the normal variety. The chocolate is no match in taste for the good old Yorkie too.

    Hey Luke!

What makes a good blog? Well you’re off to a good start! I’m afraid that I’m one of those people who tends to read them, and I loosely write my own in the form of Facebook notes. I try to make them funny, or occasionally exciting. And the ones I read often are the ones by my friends who are funny, or the ones who are off in exotic and interesting countries, like Sophie in Paraguay. So I think good blog formulae is having something interesting to talk about, inciting debate as you said is always good, and being funny is key (though not sure if I ever manage to achieve this in mine!)

And yes, I do by Fair Trade as much as I can, especially tea and coffee. I try and buy the chocolate over normal chocolate brands, even though it is more expensive, because it tastes better and has an added dose of justice. The Fair Trade bananas I buy are always good quality, so I don’t know where you get yours from! And there’s lots and lots of other stuff I try to get – I did a talk on Fair Trade last Sunday at my church youth group and they all came up with loads of things you can get. They’re always more expensive, but also nearly always better quality :-)

Good luck with the rest of the blog. I look forward to reading more! In fact I’m going to read the second entry now :-)
